Discover Jester’s 5 Top Favorite Anime Series

jester as a Dragonball favorite anime series character on an old TV

My anime journey started when I was a kid, thanks to Cartoon Network and a little programming block called Toonami. Every day after school, I’d rush home to catch these shows, and before I knew it, I was hooked. Anime isn’t just something I watch; it’s been a daily part of my life ever since. Out of the thousands I’ve watched, there are five that stand above the rest. These are my favorite anime series of all time, each one unforgettable and packed with everything I love about the genre. Let’s dive into my top picks and why they mean so much to me.

Dragon Ball Z – Where It All Began

Origins & Overview: Dragon Ball Z first hit American screens on August 31, 1998, airing on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon, introducing viewers to the world of Saiyans, powerful warriors with the ability to transform and amplify their strength. The story revolves around Goku, the strongest fighter on Earth, and his quest to protect humanity from villains hailing from every dark corner of space. Together with his allies, known as the Z-Fighters, Goku travels to distant realms and faces threats ranging from galactic conquerors to genetically engineered androids.

Dragon Ball Z follows Goku in his adult years, diving deep into his battles against some of the most fearsome opponents in the universe. As he trains to master his own Saiyan powers, Goku’s journey is one of constant growth and resilience. Along the way, he encounters Vegeta, a fellow Saiyan who starts as an enemy but ultimately becomes one of his most steadfast allies. Vegeta’s rivalry with Goku and his own pursuit of power are central to this favorite anime series, and his complex character development is a major highlight for fans.

Why It’s a Favorite Anime Series: Dragon Ball Z was my first experience with anime, and it’s still the series that started it all for me. I remember coming home from school just to catch Goku, Vegeta, and the crew battling it out, each episode more intense than the last. Vegeta quickly became my favorite character. His pride, determination, and constant need to prove himself make him an unforgettable figure in the anime. The Queen even got me a custom painting for our first Christmas together of Vegeta and his wife, Bulma, cuddling on a couch, just like we do, it’s hands down one of my favorite presents.

Standout Moments: Vegeta’s character arc is one of the best parts of Dragon Ball Z. He starts as an arrogant warrior obsessed with surpassing Goku and proving himself as the Saiyan Prince. But over time, he grows to protect and care for those around him, even forming a family with Bulma. Vegeta’s journey from villain to anti-hero, and eventually to a proud father and loyal friend, is incredible to watch. His iconic moments—like achieving Super Saiyan for the first time or battling alongside Goku—show the depth of his character and his evolution over the series.

Naruto– The Path of a Ninja

Origins & Overview: Naruto became an international sensation when it first aired, captivating audiences with its complex characters, dynamic battles, and intricate world-building. Created by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto follows the story of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja with dreams of becoming the Hokage, the strongest ninja and leader of the Hidden Leaf Village. Born with a secret sealed within him, Naruto is often treated as an outsider, but his resilience and unwavering determination drive him to gain respect and acceptance from his peers. Throughout the series, Naruto goes through intense training, builds bonds with his teammates, and faces various enemies who challenge him both physically and emotionally.

The storyline dives deep into the world of ninjas, exploring various villages, clans, and powerful techniques called jutsu. It also introduces a host of memorable characters, each with their unique backgrounds and struggles. Among them is Itachi Uchiha, a powerful and enigmatic figure who becomes both a hero and a tragic character. Naruto’s journey from an underdog to a hero is filled with unforgettable battles and emotional moments, making it one of the most beloved anime series in history.

Why It’s a Favorite Anime Series: Naruto is definitely one of my all-time favorite anime series because of its epic storyline and the depth of its characters. I’m especially drawn to Itachi Uchiha, who is not only incredibly powerful but has one of the most complex and tragic backstories in the series. His journey from a loyal member of the Leaf Village to a rogue ninja, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for peace, makes him a fascinating character to watch.

The Queen knows how much I admire Itachi, so she made me a custom mirror with his Sharingan eye design on it, an awesome addition to my collection. I also love the fight scenes in Naruto, where each character’s jutsu reflects their personality and skills. The hand signs, the chakra, and the intensity of every battle scene make it a favorite anime series I never get tired of rewatching.

Standout Moments: Some of the most powerful scenes in Naruto involve Itachi, particularly his interactions with his younger brother, Sasuke. The rivalry and complex relationship between the two brothers drive much of the story, and their final confrontation is unforgettable. Itachi’s secret sacrifices and ultimate redemption reveal his true intentions and solidify him as one of the most compelling characters in the series. Plus, the battle scenes, especially when Naruto unleashes his Nine-Tails power or when characters perform iconic jutsu—showcase some of the best animation and fight choreography in anime. The world of Naruto is intense, filled with friendship, betrayal, and loyalty, making it a masterpiece that truly resonates.

Bleach– The Battle for the Soul Society

Origins & Overview: Bleach, created by Tite Kubo, follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who gains the powers of a Soul Reaper after accidentally receiving them from Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper tasked with defending humans from evil spirits known as Hollows. As Ichigo navigates his new role, he quickly finds himself entangled in the world of the Soul Society—a realm governed by powerful Soul Reapers responsible for protecting the balance between the living world and the afterlife. With his newfound abilities, Ichigo learns to wield his Soul Reaper sword, or Zanpakuto, and face dangerous enemies threatening humanity and the Soul Society alike.

The storyline dives into a deep lore that explores the concept of Hollows, Soul Reapers, and the unique powers each character possesses. The series builds up to an epic rescue mission, where Ichigo and his friends venture into the Soul Society, uncovering a web of betrayal and secrets within the Soul Reaper ranks. Each arc of Bleach introduces new and powerful adversaries, allies, and monsters. Ichigo’s journey isn’t just a battle against external enemies; it’s also an exploration of his own identity and the limits of his strength.

Why It’s a Favorite Anime Series: Bleach is one of my favorite anime series,I especially connect with Ichigo Kurosaki’s journey from a regular teenager to a powerful Soul Reaper; it’s a coming-of-age story with a supernatural twist. Ichigo’s strength, loyalty, and constant drive to protect his friends make him a hero I can really admire. Plus, his Bankai transformation, an advanced form of his Soul Reaper powers, has to be one of the coolest moments in anime. I even cosplay as Ichigo sometimes, fully embracing his look and attitude. The Queen probably hears me talk about Bankai more than she’d like!

Standout Moments: One of the most iconic moments in  is Ichigo’s first Bankai transformation, where he reveals his Tensa Zangetsu, a powerful and unique sword form that gives him superhuman speed and strength. This moment is a turning point in his journey as a Soul Reaper and solidifies him as a formidable warrior within the Soul Society. Ichigo’s battles against antagonists like Aizen and the Arrancars are intense and showcase the depth of his power and determination. The action, combined with the darker themes of duty, loyalty, and sacrifice, makes Bleach a standout favorite anime series that’s impossible to put down once you start.

Fullmetal Alchemist – A Journey of Brotherhood and Sacrifice

Origins & Overview: Fullmetal Alchemist, created by Hiromu Arakawa, is one of the most critically acclaimed anime series of all time. The story is set in a world where alchemy is a widely practiced science, governed by the principle of equivalent exchange: to gain something, one must sacrifice something of equal value. The series follows Edward and Alphonse Elric, two brothers who attempt to use alchemy to bring their deceased mother back to life. However, their experiment goes horribly wrong—Edward loses an arm and a leg, while Alphonse loses his entire body and becomes bound to a suit of armor.

The series focuses on their quest to find the Philosopher’s Stone, a mythical object that could restore their bodies. Along the way, they uncover deep conspiracies, engage in battles with Homunculi (artificial humans), and grapple with moral questions about the cost of power and the nature of humanity. The story’s world-building, complex characters, and themes of sacrifice and redemption have made Fullmetal Alchemist a masterpiece in anime storytelling.

Why It’s a Favorite Anime Series: Out of all the anime I’ve watched, Fullmetal Alchemist has one of the most compelling and emotionally charged storylines. Edward Elric, the older brother, is my favorite character—his determination to protect Alphonse at all costs, even while carrying immense guilt for their failed experiment, makes him incredibly relatable. His wit, courage, and refusal to back down, even when facing seemingly insurmountable odds, make him a standout protagonist. I also appreciate how this favorite anime series blends intense action with deeper philosophical themes about the consequences of ambition and the bonds of family. It’s a show that makes you think while keeping you hooked with its incredible pacing and emotional depth.

Standout Moments: One of the most unforgettable moments in Fullmetal Alchemist is the brothers’ first failed experiment, which sets the tone for the entire series. The horror of that scene and the consequences they face are seared into your memory. Another standout is Edward’s fight with Greed, where his alchemy skills and sheer determination shine through. The series finale (I won’t spoil it for anyone!) is one of the most satisfying and emotional endings I’ve ever seen in anime. The balance between action, drama, and heart-wrenching moments makes Fullmetal Alchemist a series that stays with you long after the credits roll.

Sword Art Online– The Virtual World Where the Stakes Are Real

Origins & Overview: Sword Art Online (SAO), based on the light novel series by Reki Kawahara, takes place in the year 2022, where virtual reality gaming has reached incredible new heights. Players use a device called the NerveGear to immerse themselves completely in a virtual world. The story begins with the launch of a revolutionary MMORPG, Sword Art Online, but things take a dark turn when players realize they cannot log out. The game’s creator traps them in this virtual reality, announcing that if they die in the game, they die in real life.

The protagonist, Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya, is a skilled beta tester for SAO and one of the first players trapped in the game. With his expertise and determination, Kirito navigates the perilous world of Aincrad, a floating castle with 100 floors that players must clear to escape. Along the way, he forms alliances, including a close bond with Asuna, a skilled swordswoman, and together they face deadly bosses, uncover secrets, and strive to free everyone from the game’s lethal grip. Sword Art Online captivated audiences with its mix of high-stakes action, virtual reality themes, and emotional storytelling.

Why It’s a Favorite Anime Series: Sword Art Online is one of my favorite anime series because of its unique concept and intense storytelling. The idea of being trapped in a game where your life is on the line is both terrifying and exhilarating. Kirito is a standout character for me—his intelligence, bravery, and emotional growth throughout the series make him someone you can’t help but root for. I also love the dynamic between Kirito and Asuna; their partnership and romance add an emotional depth that sets this anime apart. The world-building in SAO is incredible, with each level of Aincrad offering new challenges, stunning visuals, and an ever-present sense of danger.

Standout Moments: One of the most iconic moments in Sword Art Online is Kirito’s duel with Heathcliff, the leader of the Knights of the Blood Oath. The tension and stakes in this battle are through the roof, especially as secrets about Heathcliff are revealed. Another standout moment is Kirito and Asuna’s time in the secluded cabin, a rare moment of peace and humanity in an otherwise intense and dangerous world. And, of course, the final confrontation of the Aincrad arc is unforgettable, with its mix of high-stakes action and emotional weight. This favorite anime series excels at balancing thrilling battles with heartfelt moments, making it a must-watch for any anime fan.

There you have it, my top five favorite anime series. Narrowing it down to just five was no easy task, especially since I’ve watched and loved thousands of anime over the years. Each of these shows has left a lasting impression on me, whether it’s through unforgettable characters like Vegeta, Edward Elric, or Kirito, or the incredible worlds they bring to life. These series remind me why I fell in love with anime in the first place: the epic stories, the jaw-dropping action, and the way they make you think, laugh, and even tear up.

If you’re new to anime or just looking for your next series to binge, I hope this list inspires you to dive in. Trust me, there’s an anime out there for everyone, and these five are a great place to start. Even The Queen, who’s more into Sailor Moon and the whimsical charm of Kiki’s Delivery Service, has found anime she enjoys. She’s watched Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen with me, and I think she had just as much fun as I did. Like I always say, there’s an anime out there for everyone, you just have to find the one that speaks to you.
